Day 45 – near Buffalo, KY to Harodsville, KY – 77 miles

Today was a mixed bag of highs and lows….

Beautiful scenery as we rode, lots of rolling hills, gorgeous homesteads and estates, decent roads. We were prepared to be less than impressed with Kentucky – not sure why because it really is pretty and one of our prettiest areas of the whole trip. Put it this way – Kentucky is WAAAAY nicer than what we saw of Kansas, Missouri and southern Illinois

There doesn’t seem to be the same economic blight as we go through this area. In Loretto, we passed where Makers Mark bourbon is distilled. Very cool buildings housing all the. Barrels for various year’s vintages.

These photos show only a few of the multiple distillery/barrel storage buildings at Makers Mark. Very cool!
The area seems to have embraced black barn look. Not many white or even red barns – most seem to have gone with the darker palettes – very striking and I like it.
Abe Lincoln’s grandpa, Captain Abe Lincoln, was killed near this spot by native Americans.
Oh, the irony….
So pretty

Now for the low of the day – my bike, Louise, has stress cracks in the rear wheel. I love Louise to bits and she’s been a super trooper this whole trip but did she HAVE to have such high spec wheels that most stores don’t stock??? Who knew she was such a princess???? So tomorrow we’re off to Lexington, KY to hopefully find the perfect replacement wheel. If they don’t have it, we’re scrambling.

I drowned my sorrows by getting a badly needed manicure, Mark got a pedicure in the quaint town of Danville.

Nice homes here
And so many churches!

  1. Good luck getting her a wheel, that’s a wild bum! I think Kentucky is gorgeous. I had lunch with the senators wife from Louisville and she said “ pretty like Napa” so now I believe her! Proud of you guys!💋💋💋

Fingers crossed you get the wheel for Louise quickly. And you’re inspiring me and Brian to go to KY! Bourbon 🥃 trail and more! I used to go quite a bit for work as RR Donnelley had mfg plants in Danville and Glasgow KY. Great Caves (Mammoth for sure) to explore too! I’m looking forward to connecting post trip! What an amazing lifetime experience! 🤞 for the wheel 🎉🚴‍♀️🚴🙌👏

You’re making good steady progress even with the challenges, but that’s what makes a great adventure, and all for a worthwhile cause. Today I gave the Park City Rotary Club a quick update on your journey and everyone sends their best.
