Today was a day of surprises. I came across this family of raccoons – here you see the 3 babies – mom had just run off. You’ll have to zoom in to see them better but trust me, they were so cute and CURIOUS! Unfortunately the car honked at them and off they scurried, cutting short my time of gazing at their innocence. Oh well.
And who has a bass for a mailbox? We’ve seen tons of interesting mailboxes on this trip – have posted some but wish we had photographed more so we could do a gallery. There’s still time – Illinois, Kentucky and Virginia should provide some interesting material!
Sue and Brad stopped into a gift shop in Hartville, Missouri while they waited for us to arrive. The wonderful shopkeeper, who’s mom passed from cancer, very kindly passed an envelope to us with a cash donation for ACS, saying “it isn’t much, we’re just a small shop trying to keep the town going” – what a kind hearted gesture and such a surprise!
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THESE ARE????
There were about a dozen of them next to where we had dinner tonight. We think birdhouses but the holes are so small…..
Love small town USA. So envy your journey. It looks wonderful!
Our house sold quickly but then the guy backed out. Don’t know why?? We’ll try try again. We leave Aug.12 for Boise then home. Sorry we’ll miss you:(
I think they are Purple Martin homes. Dont think they are bat houses. . . at least none I’ve ever seen before.
Keep on biking.🚵🚵
Nothing says midwest like Bass mailboxes and Raccoons by the dozen! Keep on pedaling.
Purple Martin houses. They like to nest in communities.
Glad you’re having fun!
Looks like they’re bird boxes for what we call house martins or sand martins – cool
