Day 28 – Eads, CO to Scott City, KS – 104 miles

We’ve left “Incarceration Row” and are now in the “Feed Lot Belt”. So many cows. We’re not talking in terms of thousands here – we’re talking MILLIONS. And, they’re kinda smelly when the wind is blowing the “wrong” way.

Today was a “people” day. We met 16 other cyclists going east to west to benefit MS. They’re sleeping in churches, libraries, campgrounds etc. Each participant had to come up with $5,200 worth of donations to MS to participate. It’s a pretty well organised group. We’re glad we’re in hotels!

We crossed into Kansas at about our 40th mile, then the Central Time Zone 10 miles later.

Bye bye Colorado – Hello Kansas!

We met 2 guys at a Cenex (gas) station as well as a couple who saw our shirts and paid for our drinks. Met another couple at the hotel who are donating to our cause as she had breast cancer twice. It’s amazing how many people are interested in our ride when they see our shirts. Plus, the shirts are super bright and good visibility on the road. Glad we got them.

Let’s see, what else can we tell you about …..hmmm

There’s oil pumpers
A cemetery….
Grain silos and a train….

Those of you from the Midwest – please take no offence…. My mom grew up in Kansas and Dad grew up in Nebraska and I grew up in Illinois, so I’m a Midwesterner at heart but riding through the Midwest can be a bit lacking in mental and visual stimulation. I knew it was a bit dull during my sales days when my territory was Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, but cycling through has really underscored the void.

I’d like to say the next 7-10 days are going to be a compilation of National Geographic-worthy photos and essays, but I think not. So we’ll still be blogging but get ready for the more emotional and esoteric reporting of our journey. Bet you can’t wait ……

  1. Fun fact – Kansas is one of the few states that does not accept EZ-Pass. It’s a good thing you’re on bicycles

  2. We have the Valley in California and very reminiscent of the midwest. There are the Cow Farms…. And our are methane labs! Very stinky. So I hope you have visual beauty and less smelly whiffs in your future, lol 😝
