Quiz Question:
Which of the following poses high risk to cyclists in Wyoming:
A. Heat
B. Wind
C. Angry dogs
D. Newly laid road surface
E. Kamikaze Grasshoppers
F. Roadkill
G. Wildlife crossing the road
ANSWER: If you guessed all of them, congratulations, you’re correct!
Today was HOT (made hotter by the newly paved road surface coming out of Lander. ) With full sun exposure we felt like a baked potato left in the microwave too long. Then came the crazy Wyoming winds – they prefer to go in every direction – they’re not picky. We had about 10 miles of Kamikaze grasshoppers hitting our face and body – rather distracting. There was so much roadkill on the shoulders it was a bit depressing. Mostly birds, but still….
Saw an antelope crossing the road – beautiful.
And finally, Mark was approached and nearly bit by an angry dog. With bear spray at the ready, I passed the area on the opposite side of the road. This is my biggest fear on this trip.
Wyoming is a visual mixed bag. You have the Tetons and Yellowstone with incomparable beauty, the red cliffs and striated mounds and cliffs of the Wind River area, and then it turns to dry and lumpy.
Be safe! Keep up the hard work!
One of the days that gets logged as, “Glad we got through that one!” Attacking grasshoppers would have sent me into the sag wagon
