Day 14 – Ennis MT to West Yellowstone MT – 71 miles

Who’s heard of Earthquake Lake? Anyone?

Neither had any of us….. if we hadn’t taken this trip none of us would have landed on this absolute gem of a site. It was everybody’s favorite.

The lake was formed when a 7.5 magnitude earthquake under the Madison River occurred in August 1959, causing the side of an adjoining mountain to break away and slide into the river, thus blocking flow. 28 people died, some in the campground below the slide, others in cabins. The Army Corps of Engineers had to create a sluice way to prevent the backing up lake that was now forming from breaking the Hebgen Dam.

This was pretty big deal back then, but not a well known event. The Visitor Center is terrific and the ride along the river was stunning.

It was also a good nature day including pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep and lots of fisherman on the Madison River, but Earthquake Lake was the gem.

  2. it is amazing. I’ve never heard of earthquake lake. It looks like a wonderful place to visit. Along with all the incredible vistas of Yellowstone you have the ride of a lifetime. So glad to see you have some friends joining you to make the trip even more enjoyable. We’re still suffering from the heat wave out west but it’s moving to the interior. Enjoy enjoy 😍🥰😘😎

  3. Earthquake Lake is a classic. I’ve been there a few times. In my many backpack trips to Yellowstone I often explore around the Park and discovered Quake Lake which is what it is more often called. And you also got to enjoy beautiful Hebgen Lake which is quite large. Looks like you’re riding through Yellowstone. I hope you’re riding very early, the roads are narrow don’t’ have a shoulder. But enjoy your time in the Park.
