Day 42 – Sebree KY to Fordsville KY – 54 miles

Today’s ride was similar to yesterday’s (except no cool ferry), so there’s more to say about our hotel last night, which was a real surprise.

The Holiday Inn Express Owensboro Riverfront, right on the Ohio River, is next to a cool convention center building, has a nicely designed lobby with a very tasty restaurant/bar, but the clincher was live music on a Thursday night in the lobby of a Holiday Inn! The River City Strings are amateurs who play for free. Sometimes three show up, last night there were six for a full bluegrass ensemble. They were sooooo down home, nice and fun to hear. When Mark walked up to see if they had a tip jar, they said no one had ever asked. Then a minute later they set out the open fiddle case so h we said he’d go to our room and get some cash. By the time he got back 5 minutes later, there was as already $30 in the case and they were thrilled at the support. They even incorporated words about Utahns cycling across the country into one of their songs.

Today’s ride past corn and soybean fields, industrial chicken farms and some beautiful Kentucky horses was cut short by another mid-afternoon thunderstorm.

Tomorrow we cycle through The Knobs, isolated hills that surround part of the Bluegrass region, approaching Mammoth Cave National Park.
